WrapMeCool - 5 Tips On How to Keep Cool During Heatwaves - Babies & The Elderly Most At Risk

During heatwaves, babies and toddlers, the elderly and people with chronic diseases are most at risk because their bodies struggle to cope with extreme heat.  For homes without air conditioning, it’s important to find a way to expel the heat that builds up inside the house.

The natural way of maintaining normal body temperature is by sweating but in extreme heat our bodies have to work harder and can go into “stress”. You might notice you start breathing more rapidly, might feel weak, perhaps even faint, develop headaches, start cramping or become confused - especially if you overexert yourself or are already experiencing health problems.

So here’s our top 5 tips
to help you keep cool right now

Prepare Your Home

  • Identify the coolest room in the house
  • Hot air rises, making top floors warmer than ground floors. If you’re in a multi-storey house, stay downstairs as much as possible. If you have a basement, that can be the best refuge from the midday heat
  • Keep your windows closed and pull down the shades or draw your curtains when it’s hotter outside
  • Switch dark-colored blinds and curtains for light-colors because dark colors can make a room feel hotter
  • Place reflective material on the outside of your windows
  • Only open your windows for ventilation when it’s cooler - either early in the morning or later in the evening

Prepare Yourself

  • Have cool baths or showers and splash yourself with cool water
  • Stay out of the sun and don't go out between 11am and 3pm (usually the hottest part of the day)
  • If you do need to go outside, wear loose, cool clothing, put on a hat and wear sunglasses. Stay in the shade as much as possible
  • Keep a water spray bottle with a “Mist” diffuser handy
  • Drink cold water or diluted fruit juice regularly throughout the day
  • Avoid excess alcohol, caffeine (tea, coffee and cola) or drinks high in sugar (this is the reason why you should dilute fruit juices)
  • Eat fruit and fresh foods that don’t require the use of your oven or stove to prepare
  • Large, protein-rich meals can increase metabolic heat and warm your body
  • Avoid hot and spicy food

Keep Hydrated

  • Drink cold water or diluted fruit juice regularly throughout the day
  • Avoid excess alcohol, caffeine (tea, coffee and cola) or drinks high in sugar (this is the reason why you should dilute fruit juices)

WrapMeCool - 5 Tips On How to Keep Cool During Heatwaves - Become Socially Responsible

Become Socially Responsible

  • Check up on your elderly neighbors to make sure they’re coping - sadly, at least 60% of those people who died in Montreal were men living alone, without air conditioning & living in multi-storeyed homes (source: https://www.cbc.ca)
  • If your home has air conditioning, consider sharing the coolness with neighbours who don’t have it, by inviting them to your home
  • Plan social excursions to public buildings with air conditioning - libraries, shopping malls, and even the movie theater can all be good places to cool down
  • Take care of your pets - they also suffer when the temperature rises. Make sure they have plenty of water to drink, give them a "cool" bath or shower or place a cool towel on the floor.  Keep them inside or provide shade for them
